Sickness Benefit

Sickness Benefit is a cash amount paid for the number of days a member is unable to work due to sickness or injury.


 Qualifying Conditions:
  • member was unable to work due to sickness or injury and confined either in the hospital or at home for at least four days
  • paid at least 3 months of contributions within the 12-month period immediately before the semester of sickness
  • has consumed all current company sick leaves with pay for the current year
  • has notified his or her employer or the SSS before 5 calendar days of confinement has elapsed unless confinement is in a hospital  (hospital records exist)
  • if separated, voluntary or self-employed member, has notified the SSS of sickness before 5 calendar days has elapsed (hospital records are proof of leave)

Requirements

1. For employed member - approved SSS Form CLD-9N (Sickness Notification)

2. For the employer - SSS Form B-304 (Sickness Benefit Reimbursement Application)

3. For the unemployed/ Self-employed/ Voluntary Member -
  • approved SSS Form CLD-9A (Sickness Benefit Claim for Unemployed/ Self-employed/ Voluntary Members)
  • SSS Form MMD-102 (Medical Certificate)
  • Certification from last employer showing the effective date of separation from employment or notice of company's closure/strike or certification from the Department of Labor and Employment that the employee or employer has a pending labor case
  • Certification that no advance payment was granted, if the confinement period applied for is within or prior to date of separation
Limitations:
Not more than 120 days per year will be paid on the same illness.
Not more than 240 days will be paid on the same illness.

I am now a voluntary member of sss and continously paying my sss contribution since I left my job last year and now I am filing my sss sickness but it was denied due to lack of one requirement and that is l501 of my former employer..is it necessary to give a copy since I have no more employer? Ms. Baby

    1. technically, no but the SSS form requires a certification.
      also, it would be the responsibility of your former employer's representative but if you want the benefit, try to conform first.

      SSS might be reviewing forms and this will serve as good input to them. Will try to discuss it with the Manager

  2. Hi. When I was with my previous employer back in 2012 (March), I was confined at home as advised by the doctor to rest for a month. I was not paid by the company because I had no sick leave credits anymore. Thinking that the SSS sick benefit was just if you were confined at the hospital, I did not apply for a claim. It's just recently that I learned that I could have done so. Is it too late for me or I can still apply for a claim? What do I need to present? Also, now with my current employer, I've been out for almost a month but due to a different illness and will submit my resignation tomorrow. Can I file for sick claims for both instances?     1. you cannot apply for the sickness benefit in the first case as it is already 2014. It is much too late.

      well, were you confined with your current illness? Sickness notification is required within 5 days of the illness unless you were hospitalized. If you were hospitalized, you can file within a year, otherwise, it is too late again

    I was not confined I was just advised to rest and to do tons of laboratory tests. Yes, my employer was notified within the first 5 days of my absence. If I resign now, what will I need to get from them when I file for the claim and I am no longer with the company? Also, there was no particular number of days indicated in the medical certificate as to how long I needed to rest is because the time needed to do all the lab tests could not be determined yet. Will that be accepted? Thanks. -Tarry

  4. The SSS has to be informed of your rest within 5 days of receiving your advice. Your employer is supposed to reimburse you for your sick leave if you have none left. You cannot claim to SSS directly.

      YOU CANNOT CLAIM DIRECTLY FROM SSS
      just report your employer to SSS before you resign so someone from SSS can go to your employer

  9. Hi! I had an approved sickness claim for 60 days covering period apr8-june8. However, my injury still prevent me from returning to my work. Is it possible to file another claim for the same reason? I understand the maximum is at 120 days in one calendar year. Thanks!

  11. Good day. I suffered from 1st degree to second degree burns which happened at home and would like to file for sickness benefit from SSS. I was hospitalized from May 18 and discharged on the 26th. But my doctor filled out 2 CLD-9N. one stating the start of the hospital confinement leaving the part which says I am fit to work blank since I am still recuperating and the other form for home confinement application stating i got discharged from the hospital on the 26th and gave a date of june 28 as fit to work to be attached for my home confinement application.
    Am I supposed to file this separately or do I just file and attach the 2 forms for hospital confinement? Thanks!

      you might need a medical abstract- from the hospital records -if you are applying later on for disability

  12. Hi! Yesterday, I was advised by my physician to rest at home for a month. Am I eligible for the SSS sickness benefit? I already informed my employer of my month-long absence but I'm quite hesitant to file a claim because I don't fully understand the 'confined' part on the qualifications. Thanks.

    1. you must notify SSS thru your employer immediately - that is within 5 days of your confinement - home or hospital.
      the difference is if hospitalized, you can file and notif within one year, if you are hospitalized the first part of this reply applies.

  13. im home confined for renal disorder last aug 7 until now. nakaleave ako sa company pero last friday ko lng nainform ang employer ko about sa sick leave kc d ako familiar sa process.i was asked to go personally sa sss and check if i can get a stamp para sa sick leave application ko.. i was advised by the doctor to keep my home confinement hanggang until sept 20 2014. possible pa kya maapprove ung sick leave application ko from aug7 to sept 20,2014?       the procedure is to inform SSS within 5 days of confinement as confined in the hospital.

      most likely you will be denied for late notification.

  14. i'm confined at home due to food allergy since sept 06, 2014. i've been informing my boss the night before that i would be absent the following day, everynight. but due to recurrence of my allergy i've been absent until now, sept 11, 2014. can i still file the sickness benefit?? thanks po..

  15. hi i underwent surgery july 21 and i was discharged on july 24. I was advised by my doctor to rest for a month for full recovery. I filed my sss sickness form and all documents needed to my employer 1st week of august. Until now I was advised to extend my medical leave for another month since I am not fully recovered yet. Is it too late for me to file an extension? I talked to my doctor he said he is willing to help with my sickness benefit. I am just not sure if i can still do that.
    Can I still file an extension?
    If I resign due to being not fit for the job anymore will I still be able to get the benefit?

  16. Hi Ms. Guia,
    it is my first time to file a sickness notification of one of our employee.. She even didn't notify us that she was sick. She had her 5-day rest as her ob remarks starting 9-13 and to return on 15th. She gave her notification to us last 19th without notification(acknowledgement receipt) from SSS. Do I have to file it for her? And what forms should I need the B304 or B309? Thank you for your reply.

    I was approved 100 days sick benefit by sss on july 4 but i was not informed by my previous employer (com. A) so i told them about it since i resigned from them effective july 25 2014. After waiting for how many mos. They are now asking me to provide a copy of my contributions so they can compute bec i got injured oct 2013 and i was hired march 2013 so they need to compute from oct 2012 when i was still employed with another company. However i cant access online.. even went to ss to ask for a copy but they said they dont provide a copy. I talked to the sss manager and she spoke with compny a hr manager and advised hr that the company rep needs to go to sss and sss will compute it for them. I even escalated my issue to company a's director but she said they have processes to follow. I exhausted all my options even asked friends from sss but no one can help me. 45k is a big help for me since i paid 20% of all medical fees when i fractured 3 bones in my foot bec company a medical benefit is 80/20. Im thinking of filing a complaint before oct comes bec this too stressful i went back and forth to sss branches and no one can help me. I stopped sending emails to company a 2 days ago bec they said they will update me but they wont let me know what is happening unless i send them tons of emails. Do you think i can file a complaint since it will be 1 yr on oct? Ive waited long enough. Hoping to hear from you. Thank you.

    1. your question is confusing and is NOT in the correct order.
      where you in fact absent 100 days from your previuos employer? it isnt clear.
      but yes, you can complain to Member Relations Dept. and do so as soon as you can.
      you might also want to complain to DOLE because your previous employer seems to be not doing anything

Ask ko lang po kase po ngayon ko lang po kase nabasa yung regarding sa sick benefit. kakapanganak ko lang po cs po ako, naubos ko na din po ang maternity leave ko, then hindi po ako agad nakapasok. After a week po tnry ko po pumasok then dinugo po akoo tapos ngpacheck up po ako, last oct 11 po, e ngayon ko lang po nalaman ung sick benefit pwde ko pa po kaya ifile yun sa employer ko?   24. Hi po pwede ko po ba ifile as sickness benefit ang uti.. Nagpacheck up ako nov22, pero absent na ako since nov21 until today 24.. Wala na po akong sl from company kaya gusto ko sana malaman kung pwede po sa sss ko na lang ifile. Thanks!

    After my gall bladder operation I was advised to rest for 30 days and it was written and signed by my doc on the form ive submitted to sss office. However, SSS only approve 15 days. May i know what are the factors or basis of the number of days sickness claims approval?

  27. Hi. I just like to share that my claim for sickness benefit was declined due to late notification when I filed it by the time that I have consumed all of my sick leaves. I was sick last Sept. 1-14 and my paid sick leaves were only until Sept 10. I submitted all the docs required within the 5 day period but it was returned and denied stating late notification. I think SSS should be clear about their rules and procedures.

    Here's my situation:
    I filed for the sickness benefit thru my employer last year around August 2014 due to surgery (removal of one ovary) and since I was also pregnant at the time, was given 60 days to rest due to threatened abortion.
    Then after that, when I got back to my doctor last October 2014, I was told to continue my bed rest due to threatened abortion for another month. I filed an extension to sss thru my employer. (1st extension)
    After a month, my doctor told me to extend my bed rest again for another month until December 2014. So I filed another extension to SSS thru my employer. (2nd extension)

    My first sss application was just approved just last month (January 2015). I just filed my resignation and my last day will be this March.
    1. Here's my question: How do I know if my filed extensions have been approved? When I reach my last day of employment, will it be my responsibility to follow up on those claims?
    2. Since my employer paid for those months that I was on medical leave, what will happen if SSS denies my 2 extension claims? Will this affect my separation/last pay?
    3. What will happen to my claims if they are approved?

    I have been asking our HR regarding this case, but I am not getting any response for weeks now.

    I hope you can shed some light. It will be very much appreciated.

    Kagagaling ko lang po kasi ng one month bedrest for threatened preterm labor so bumalik ako sa work last feb 23. Ngayon po advised ult sa akin bedrest till manganak because of same illness po.maapproved po kaya ng sss un.

    1. it is a requirement, or if you prefer, a condition.
      SSS is really a retirement fund. Sickness and Salary Benefits are just additional benefits added on for active/young members

  46. hi! how will i know if my sickness benefits has been approved? beacuse i havent received any updates from my employer. My employer told me that i will just receive the reimbursement through payroll account if it was approved, or will receive an email if declined. But i havent received any, so i just want to ask if theres anyway to know if it was approved or not aside from going to our office. Thank you!

    1. no, you are not qualified for the sickness benefit.
      sickness benefit is a short term benefit given to active, that is, paying members.

      however, you may qualify for disability, depending on the nature of the surgery

  49. nagfile po ako ng sickness march 2014, due to placenta previa & myoma uteri cause me severe bleeding, it was file for 60 days but denied to 30 days instead. but the sss doctor ask me to file it again for another 30days, but i didnt do that. i resigned to my employer aug 2014. they advance me the 10 k of my maternity but until now i didnt get it, sss said the check release and will be deposited to my employer check date is march 13,2015. how many days it will deposited to my employer, do im qualify to file the 30 sickleave before ( palcenta previa/ myoma uteri), im a voluntary payer since 2014 until now. thanks mam

    1. I was confined and advised to rest for 3 months and filed claim 2 after i returned to work. It was approved by sss for a refund. But my office only refunded me 2 months. And when i asked for the remaining amt that was approved. my pffice find a way to terminate my empoyment and told me to claim remaining amt at sss since i am not connected with the company anymore. What should i do?

    I am really confused about 4 days of being unable to work in qualifying conditon for sickness benefits. I am sick with a fever and tonsillitis condition last april 4( which happened to be holiday) until now i cant go to work but i got check up yesterday april 6. My question is holiday can be counted on for the 4 days requirements ? Or fever or tonsillitis can be applicable to apply? Thank you

    1. unable to work means that first of all, there should be work. if it is a holiday, then there is no work. So, no. it does not count. Moreover, you shouldnt have any leaves left to qualify for sickness benefits. the md decides which illnesses apply

    1. no. you have to follow sss requirements, one of which is that your physician has to sign and put his diagnosis on the form.
      i hope you have already submitted the sickness notification form. if not, have it submitted before 5 days has elapsed from first day of illness

    1. depends on what you are applying for - sickness benefit is only for number of days you missed work - no such thing as monthly payment or reimbursement.

  61. hi miss Guia, I just want to clarify since it is said earlier that sickness benefit cash amount paid is for the number of days the person is unable to work.. I have an idea of how it is computed though i just wanted to know if rest days are included.. my situation is I had an injury last march 3, 2015 and was advised to rest for 90 days by the doctor and was approved of 60 days by sss. Everything went well and I was able to get a fit to work for may 2, 2015. should i multiply the daily sickness allowance to 60 days or should I deduct sat. and sundays for my rest days which will only leave me approximately around 43 days? thanks

    I just want to ask if irerelease parin ba ng company ko ung SSS reimbursment check ko na iaadvance nila kahit wala na ako sa company?
    I filed it last April 20, 2015 and until now, June 1, 2015 wala pa rin ung advance nila.
    I asked them if kelan darating and I was told that it was already requested and just waiting for it to be delivered back to them, yet the person who was assigned to pick up checks from Union bank, which is the bank being requested for the check , is on-leave until today and they told me that possibly it can be released within this week, June 1-5, 2015.
    I need to do an immediate resignation this Tuesday, June 2 due to some serious personal matters and I'm very worried about the check since I need the money so bad to provide continuous medication for my dad who doesn't want to go to the hospital anymore..

    I hope masagot nyo po to ASAP.

  74. Hi Ms. Guia,

    I was hospitalized last May 11 and was scheduled for surgery the following day. Got discharged by May 15 and filed SSS sickness benefit immediately by May 19 (since I heard it takes a month to process it and I was advised for 2 months leave at the office). May 27 I received an email to my company HR that SSS require additional requirements and they that they have to resubmit once it is complete (surgical technique and hospital abstract, to be exact) I got so annoyed because the liason officer from our company didn't even read my requirements thoroughly! It was all complete with pre-op and post-op clinical abstract and surgical technique which is under the operating room record. I addressed my disappointment to them and said that everythig was already been submitted if they will check everything closely.

    I really don't know how these HR officers do their jobs, if I didn't made a follow up email last night, they wouldn't notify me that it has been approved already. They mentioned that they will process the check immediately -- with the word HOWEVER, it normally takes 1 month to process it. Another follow up email came said that they have to wait for me to return to work before they can process the check. And that woild be around July! I know and I did confirm thru SSS hotline that the claim should be paid advance by the employer once it has been granted approved. The SSS also said that is under the law.

    That being said, if the company refuse to pay in advance the sss sickness benefit claim, how can I respond to it?

    I applied for sickness notification I submitted the documents on time the company acknowledge and received the documents apparently the company overlooked the dates of my confinement they put March 3 instead march 5 so the claim was disapproved by sss. I dinespute ko po and ng pareevaluate po ung company denied parin dahil kailangan daw dalawa form ginamit ksi nakalagay dun sa isang part for doctor 3days tapos may katapat na part un for doctor parin na prolong leave may nakalagay na extension na 4 days so total of 7 days.Ang sabi ng HR dapat daw 2 form ginamit habang na pinasa ko form wala sila cnabi na ganun. Isa pa na deny din daw dahil late filling na habang si Hr may kasalanan bakit na late dahil sa pagkakamali nila sa nilagay na date.Im seeking for your legal advise thanks.

    I nagundergo po ako surgery last year, august 2014 due to thyroid cancer at nakapagfile na ng claim s sss, however nagresign po ako january 2015, naayos ko na po ang mga forms at nadeny dahil sa form i501, nabgyan na ako ng employer ko pero dahil malayo na ako s dating employer sinend ito via email, is it possible na maipasa ko ito kahit printed copy or dapat e original tlaga ang form i501 before ako pmnta sa sss diliman branch?
    And kapag lumagpas po na ako ng august 2015 ay marerevoke ang claim ko dahil ang sabe saken within 1 year na ikaw ay naoperahan dapat kumpleto na lahat ng requirements, i hope you can help me.

    I was only employed for a month to a private employee. I was a government employee from 2006 to 2009 so I dont have any SSS contribution. I only started paying my SsS contribution this year January 2015. I am a self-paying member of SSS. I underwent appendectomy last May 29, 2015. Am I still qualified for a sickness benefit. I haven't apply for one as I am not certain if I qualify for one. Thank you!

  99. Im 8 mos pregnant. Already claimed 9 days for threathened abortion on my 3rd month. Then was advised for another bed rest from my 6 month until now (8 months). SSS already approved a total of 73 days on my Sickness Benefits. Since my due date will be this end of September. I can only file for 47 days Maternity Benefit for normal delivery. Is it true that SSS covers a total of 120 days for both Sickness & Maternity Benefits combined and not 120 for Sickness and another 60 or 78 days for Normal or CS delivery.
